THIS VOLUME concludes ‘The Collected Essays of Rudolf Wittkower’ with a selection from the author’s writings and lectures on Renaissance topics. It will, I hope, serve to illustrate his own approach to art history which was to him, in his own words, first and foremost the history of artists and styles, of subject matter (i.e. iconography) and techniques; and the history of ideas and concepts underlying the works of art’. But because ‘the objects on which art historical studies are focused are different from all other historical records’, an art historian should be conversant also with ‘the allied fields of antiquarianism, art criticism, art theory, and connoisseurship’. Moreover, ‘he needs the support of philosophy, semantics, psychology, and social studies. He will have to concern himself with minute facts as much as with the problems of methodology and terminology.
