Andrea Alciati’s Emblemata, the book that founded the emblem genre, in the Latin edition published in Lyon in 1548 by Guillaume Rouillé and printed by Bonhomme. First issued in 1531, Alciati’s collection joins a motto, an enigmatic picture and a short Latin epigram into a single emblem, most of them carrying a moral or symbolic lesson. This pocket-size edition gathers 126 emblems, each with its own woodcut, now attributed to Pierre Eskrich. It was the first of the Rouillé and Bonhomme editions, part of the more than one hundred editions that carried the emblem across Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries.
