The first volume of Ionian Antiquities, published in London in 1769 by order of the Society of Dilettanti. It presents the results of the Society’s expedition to Asia Minor in 1764–1766, led by the antiquary Richard Chandler with the architect Nicholas Revett and the painter William Pars. Revett’s measured drawings, Pars’s views and Chandler’s texts record three great Ionic temples: the Temple of Bacchus at Teos, the Temple of Minerva Polias at Priene and the Temple of Apollo Didymaeus near Miletus. Together with Stuart and Revett’s Antiquities of Athens, it was among the first accurate records of Greek architecture available in Britain and helped shape the Greek Revival.
