Alter, Hebrew Bible

Robert Alter’s The Hebrew Bible: A Translation with Commentary (2018) is the result of more than two decades of work and the first complete single-authored translation of the Hebrew Bible into English. Unlike theologically oriented standard translations, Alter — Emeritus Professor of Hebrew and Comparative Literature at the University of California, Berkeley — brings a distinctly literary approach to the task, prioritising the rendering of the poetic compression, narrative rhythm, and stylistic texture of biblical Hebrew. Extensive commentary accompanies each text, illuminating both its literary structure and its historical and philological context. The three-volume work was awarded the PEN Center Literary Award for Translation and stands as an essential reference for all those who approach the Hebrew Bible as a work of literary and cultural-historical significance.
