It is impossible to present in a few words a thinker and a writer who does not belong to any of the recognized fields into which our intellectual life is distributed. Michel Serres has written a great deal about scientific discovery, and yet to define him as a historian or even as a philosopher of science would not do justice to the breadth of his work. The origin of culture is one of his favorite subjects, but he is more than an anthropologist. His exquisite use of literary texts—especially the French fabulist La Fontaine who makes an appearance at the end of the present book—does not allow us to regard him simply as a literary critic.
